SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT:
With the Breaking Beauty Standards project, we want to encourage young people to be critical of beauty ideals and raise awareness of the fashion industry’s traps (fast fashion, exploitation of workers, consumer orientation, marketing imposition of fashion guidelines, negative impact on the environment). Fast fashion manipulates with consumers and forces us to feel that we always need new clothes. Therefore, we want to introduce young people to environmentally-friendly alternatives such as clothing exchange, use of second-hand clothing, support for fair trade stores, encouraging them to upcycle and recycle clothes and break stereotypes about using second-hand clothes only if you cannot afford new ones. Since this problem is a global issue, we will encourage the participants to look more critically at fashion ideals, to be aware of the controversial points of this industry and become more responsible consumers and clothing users. Young people will realize that beauty standards need to be viewed critically. Since the media and social networks create some beauty ideals that are not necessarily appropriate for everyone. Young people who do not fall into these ‘beauty categories’ feel excluded, which drastically affects their self-esteem. Fashion industry also has a worrying effect on the environment; therefore we’d like to encourage young people to make a more environmentally friendly choice in their own style, preferably through recycling of clothing and purchases in ‘second hand’ shops. The goal of our exchange is that young people learn to accept themselves and find originality in themselves and start taking care of the environment. We set the following objectives in the project:
The youth exchange will take place in Trbovlje from 21st-28th October 2019 (travelling days are 20th and 29th October).
OBJECTIVE 1: The young people will build on their self-esteem, break up the beauty stereotypes in society and become more tolerant of the appearance of others
OBJECTIVE 2: The young people will get to know the concepts of second-hand clothing and upcycling (clothing recycling and processing) as an environmentally friendly alternative and sustainable use of clothing
OBJECTIVE 3: Young people will become more aware of the problems of the fashion industry in terms of fast fashion and the negative impact on the environment
Project will include 20 young participants accompanied by 4 youth leaders from Slovenia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Malta and Greece. The project will also include participants with fewer opportunities aged 18-25. Participants will get to know themselves and the topic through non-formal learning methods, explore the term of beauty around the world, share their opinions and experience through photography, upcycling workshop and self-esteem workshops and get to know characteristics of partner countries on international evenings. Participants will visit local second-hand shop and look for their role models in everyday life, who represent their own beauty standards and ask themselves, what beauty really means to individuals. The results of the project will be presented on the final event – a clothes swap and photo exhibition in Trbovlje.
The results of the exchange will be presented at the public final event in the form a second-hand clothes swap, which will be opened with a »different« fashion show, where the participants will present their own unique style through custom made outfits of second-hand clothes. As part of the final event, a photo exhibition will also be held to show that everyone is unique in his unique way, regardless of the beauty standards in the media. After the exchange, the participants will expand the newly acquired knowledge among peers, friends and family and the local environment of the partners. We hope that decision makers from these communities will also recognize the value of such projects and exchanges of used clothing for their environments. We will spread awareness of the traps of fast fashion and consumer-oriented society and promote environmentally friendly alternatives to the acquisition of new clothes. Through visibility of our project on the social networks we will wake the curiosity of young people for this youth exchange and its topics, through street work and the final event, we will try to eliminate the concerns of young people with the use of second hand and recycled clothes, and with the help of our photo exhibition, we will raise awareness on the topic in local environments. In this way we will raise the interest in the topic also among the local population also in the wider region and encourage similar clothing exchange actions also in the local partner environments, where such regular initiatives have not yet been made.
- Final photo exhibition
- *BE UNIQUE* fashion show with self-made outfits
ACTIVITIES BEFORE THE EXCHANGE:
- Choosing the participants, building a group, group dynamics in each country (August-September 2019)
The project includes 5 young participants (ideally the group is gender balanced) per country (age 18-25) plus an experienced group leader (must be older than 18). A group leader is an adult who joins the young people participating in a Youth Exchange in order to ensure their effective learning, protection and safety.
Activities in national groups are organized by the mentor/youth leader of the group, who will come to the APV and later on accompany the participants through the youth exchange. The group of participants should be chosen as soon as possible, so youth leaders will have enough time to prepare them for the exchange. Each national group of 5 participants and their mentor will have to do some tasks before the exchange. The mentor also plans the travelling to the APV and exchange and back, is responsible for buying the tickets, making sure all the participants have the insurance for foreign countries etc.
ACTIVITIES DURING THE EXCHANGE:
- International evening – each national group presents their own country to the others
- Photo workshop (for the purposes of making the photos for the final exhibition)
- Theme workshop for getting to know the topic
- Youthpass workshop
- Street promotion action in the local environment with the purpose of inviting people to the final event
- Creative workshop for making your own outfit
- Field trip (to Ljubljana with the purpose of visiting organization Smetumet, which creates their products of recycled materials)
